Choosing the right hospital for your care is paramount—it can be a matter of life and death. And it’s not a decision you should make during a time of high-stress when you or a loved one is unwell. Arm yourself now with information on where to get the best treatment. For the last three decades, Premier’s 100 Top Hospitals program has been using data-driven analysis to determine which hospitals are achieving the best results. The most successful health systems outperform their peers on clinical outcomes and lives saved.
This year’s 100 Top Hospitals list recognizes institutions that consistently score high on patient experience, operational efficiencies, and financial health. Researchers used public Medicare data to evaluate particular measures of success, including inpatient mortality, complications, average length of stay, operating profit margin, and the number of healthcare-associated infections, among others. The hospitals that topped the list exceed in all key measures—particularly when it comes to mortality rates.
If this year’s top 100 hospitals were serving all Medicare patients, the data found that over 331,000 additional lives would be saved in a hospital setting, over 611,000 patients would be complication-free, and 13,000 fewer patients would be discharged and readmitted within 30 days. This would account for $15.1 billion in saved health care costs.
Researchers at Premier, the technology arm of the health care solutions company Premier, examined nearly 2,600 short-term, acute care, and non-federal U.S. hospitals to compile the list. Small, medium, and large community hospitals were separated out from teaching hospitals and major teaching hospitals in the ranking.
In addition to the list, Premier is highlighting 17 hospitals with Premier’s 100 Top Hospitals Everest Award for achieving the most significant long-term growth over five years.
Hospitals were not allowed to self-nominate or be nominated by other parties to join the list, nor do selected winners pay for marketing. Fifty hospitals made the list for the second year in the row.
